On Friday Marvel Comics announced that a new ongoing Superior Spider-Man series will be swinging our way this coming December.
If you’re a Spider-Man fan, then there have been plenty of things to keep you one happy camper as of late.
There’s the new PlayStation 4 Spider-Man game, which has been getting incredible reviews across the board. There is the fact that Spider-Man: Far From Home in now in production and looks to be just as much fun as Spidey’s first foray into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And of course there is the coming of Spider-Geddon, the upcoming Spider-Man event that serves as a sequel of sorts to the very popular Spider-Verse event of a few years ago.
And now you can add a new Spider-related ongoing series to the celebration of all things Spider-Man.
On Friday Marvel announced that Otto Octavius will once again be ditching the Doctor Octopus moniker and will try to show the world why he is the Superior Spider-Man.
The new series will be written by Christos Gage, who worked with Dan Slott on the original series, with artwork by Mike Hawthorne. The title will mark the renewal of Hawthorne’s exclusive contract with Marvel after years of working on Deadpool. As the artist told Marvel.com, if he has to leave Deadpool behind, he’s glad his new project involves Spider-Man.
“After drawing Deadpool for as long I did, I was a little heartbroken to be moving on. BUT, getting to work on a Spider-Man book has blunted that pain significantly! (Sorry, Wade). I’m thrilled to get a shot to work on such a flagship character! I think working specifically on Superior Spider-Man is a unique opportunity that’ll allow me to explore my own approach to a Spider-Man book. It gives me a chance to illustrate how Otto’s approach and demeanor differs from Peter, and to build on a story that I find very compelling. Christos, [editor] Nick [Lowe] and [editor] Kathleen [Wisneski] have shown a willingness to trust me and let me do my thing, which allows me to do my best work. Honestly, I haven’t been this excited to work on a new book since the beginning of Deadpool!”
As for what fans can expect in the new book, Gage said that is part of the fun, telling Marvel.com:
“The Superior Spider-Man is back! But this time he’s not trying to be a superior Peter Parker — he’s trying to be the best possible Otto Octavius. [This] includes protecting San Francisco, teaching at Horizon University in his cover identity as Elliot Tolliver, and, of course, doing everything much better than anyone else can — which is why he’s still the Superior Spider-Man! I had the great pleasure of collaborating with Dan Slott on his incredible Superior Spider-Man run, and I can’t wait for people to see this new chapter in Otto’s journey toward… redemption? Corruption? Triumph? Tragedy? That remains to be seen”
