SDCC 2018: Second Trailer For Alita: Battle Angel Released

At San Diego Comic-Con, a second trailer for the upcoming Alita: Battle Angel was released that gives viewers a lot more information about the story.

Late in 2017, 20th Century Fox released the first trailer for the James Cameron/Robert Rodriguez adaption of Yukito Kishiro’s Battle Angel Alita. While it was visually stunning and reminded everyone just how incredibly talented Rodriguez is as a director, all people could talk about was the giant “manga style” eyes star Rosa Salazar had.

Some thought they were offensive, other didn’t care, and some thought they just looked really, really weird.

Which, if we’re all being honest, they did.

So many fans were anxious to see the second trailer before they made up their minds about whether or not they would pay money to see the film. And at San Diego Comic-Con International this past weekend, during the Alita: Battle Angel panel, they got their wish.

While the first trailer only scratched the surface of the story, instead focusing on the unique visuals, the second trailer dives deep into the world of Alita: Battle Angel. In it we get a real taste for what the story is like and what moviegoers can expect.

The new trailer introduces us to the villains of the film; Mahershala Ali as a powerful resident of Iron City who wants Alita destroyed and Ed Skrein as Zapan, the powerful cyborg he gives the job to. It also gives us a much better look at Iron City and the lush CGI effects that have brought the world of the film to life.

As for Salazar’s giant eyes, yes they are still a bit creepy. Why they felt it was necessary I’m not really sure, but they are still kind of weird to look at. That said, the effect looks a lot better than it did in the first trailer and you do get used to it pretty fast.

Hollywood’s track record with manga adaptions has not been the best. While last year’s Ghost in the Shell was a gorgeous movie that deserved to have more people see it, the casting controversy surrounding Scarlett Johansson kept fans of the source material away.

Will Alita: Battle Angel suffer the same fate? With talents like James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez behind it, we can only hope fans will give it a chance. Because it looks like it’s going to be a pretty amazing movie.
