To celebrate the 25th issue of Champions, the team is heading to Weirdworld for a sword and sorcery quest to find their missing members.
Despite a huge push from Marvel when it launched, Champions has been something of a slow burn for the publisher. Despite coming out of the gate strong, sales have dipped to more normal levels in the time since. Instead, Champions has been gaining readers and interest the old fashioned way: great storytelling.
First Mark Waid and now Jim Zub have been creating some top notch comics featuring the next generation of superheroes. With rumors persisting that the Champions will be a big part of Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, expect interest in the title to only grow.
So what better time to send the team on a fantasy quest to find their missing teammates?
All day on Monday Marvel sent out a series of teasers featuring the various members of the team, each with a decidedly fantasy feeling.
Later it was finally revealed that the Champions would be heading to Weirdworld in search of the two team members who vanished into the ever changing realm.
For those who may need a refresher, Weirdworld was created by Doug Moench and Mike Ploog back in 1977. It was pretty much Dungeons & Dragons meets Game of Thrones and had quite a cult following. The idea was resurrected as part of the Secret Wars event a few years ago and proved popular enough that it was followed by another six-issue miniseries.
Now it would appear the Champions are heading there for a three-issue storyline beginning with issue #25.
And Jim Zub sounds like he couldn’t be happier.
“Everyone who knows me and my work knows that sword & sorcery is near and dear to my heart. It’s a potent vehicle for building stories of survival and heroism in worlds where life can end on the tip of a blade and creatures lurk in every shadow. The Champions fight for what’s right, no matter where they are…or who they are, and this upcoming weird and wonderful three-part story is going to show you how true that is.”
Zub will be joined on the book by artists Sean Izaakse and Max Dunbar with the first chapter going on sale in October.
More Comics: Uncanny X-Men Returns This November
If you have been on the fence about Champions, this is a perfect chance to jump on board. Much like Marvel’s Thunderbolts title from years ago, Champions is a book that rewards you for sticking around for the long haul.
Champions #25 goes on sale Oct. 3. At this point no variant covers have been announced, which in and of itself is kind of shocking.
