SDCC 2018: Uncanny X-Men Returns This November

Uncanny X-Men
Marvel Comics

Announced at the X-Men panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Uncanny X-Men, the grandaddy of all mutant titles, it set to return this fall.

It’s hard to believe now, but at one time the X-Men family of titles ruled the sales charts like few books before or since.

Before Brian Michael Bendis remade the Avengers and the Marvel Cinematic Universe came along, any series with an “X” in the title was pretty much a guaranteed best seller. X-Factor. X-Force. Mutant X. Generation X. And several titles with variations of the name X-Men in them.

However, the book the led the way and usually sat at the top of the sales chart for any given month was Uncanny X-Men. It was the mutant bible and much of what is going on the the various X-Men series toady got their start in the pages of Uncanny X-Men.

Of course, once Bendis made the Avengers the new darlings of the Marvel Universe, the mutants fell on hard times. The books didn’t sell nearly as well and rumors persisted that as long as Fox held the film rights to the X-Men, there wouldn’t be a place for Cyclops, Storm, Kitty Pryde or Gambit on comic store shelves.

That changed a few years ago when the X-Men returned to a place of prominence in Marvel Comics. X-Men Blue, X-Men Gold and X-Men Red have all become bestsellers while it looks like Disney and Marvel Studios will be getting the film rights to the X-Men back shortly.

So of course, how can you have an X-Men line of books without the title that started it all?

Announced at San Diego Comic-Con International during the X-Men panel, Uncanny X-Men will be returning to comic book stores everywhere this November.

At this point no creative team has been announced nor whether the book will use its legacy numbering or get a brand new first issue. All that is known right now is that the relaunch will happen after the X-Men Black weekly event in October that focuses on the villains of the X-Men Universe.

With the announcement of the return of Uncanny X-Men, fans are already campaigning for legendary X-Men writer Chris Claremont to be given the job. Claremont hasn’t written a regular title since 2014’s Nightcrawler came to an end after 12 issues. This despite the fact he is under exclusive contract with Marvel and has been for some time.

Let’s be honest: much of what made up the current run of X-Men comics, to say nothing of the X-Men Cinematic Universe, wouldn’t have happened without Claremont. The man is responsible for so much X-Men history and lore. Marvel should just give him the job and make everyone happy.
