SDCC 2018: Peter Tomasi Is Your New Detective Comics Writer

Peter Tomasi

Long rumored but finally confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con, Pete Tomasi is returning to the world of Batman as the new writer of Detective Comics.

It would seem that writer Peter Tomasi is finally returning to Gotham City.

As almost everyone is aware, when Brian Michael Bendis decided to make the move from Marvel to DC, it was decided that he would take over the Superman titles, which included Superman and Action Comics.

Which was great, but both those books already had some great creative teams working on them and seeing them leave would kinda suck.

Peter Tomasi in particular was doing some outstanding work on Superman. Paired with longtime collaborator Patrick Gleason the two had taken a Man of Steel that had taken a real beating at the hands of the New 52 and breathed new life into him. Between them and Dan Jurgens on Action Comics, the Superman books were some of the best reads on the stands.

In the wake of Bendis’ arrival, there was no firm word on where Tomasi would land next. That was until rumors surfaced that it was possible he would be the next writer on Detective Comics last February. John Tynion IV was wrapping up his run as he prepared to move over the the new Justice League titles and a replacement had not been announced yet.

On Friday at San Diego Comic-Con International at the DC Nation panel it was finally confirmed. Tomasi would be the new writer of Detective Comics starting with issue #994 and would be joined by artist Doug Mahnke.

Neither talent is a stranger to Gotham City. Tomasi of course wrote an incredibly popular run of Batman and Robin for the New 52 and Mahnke worked with Judd Winick on the “Under the Hood” arc which brought back Jason Todd.

Of course, with the duo joining the title with issue #994, they will be responsible for the lead-up to the milestone 1,000th issue. Currently DC hasn’t announced anything in terms of plans but Detective Comics #1000 is due for release in March of next year so you can expect the same kind of hype and buildup as we saw with Action Comics #1000.

Tomasi is one of the best and most underrated Batman writers of the last few years. His work on Batman and Robin was unfortunately overshadowed by Scott Snyder’s Batman run. But now hopefully more fans will get to see just how good a Dark Knight Tomasi can write.
