At San Diego Comic-Con the first official trailer for M. Night Shyamalan’s Glass, the sequel to both Unbreakable and Split, was revealed.
Back in 2000, a lifetime ago in movie terms, M. Night Shyamalan wrote and directed the comic book inspired film Unbreakable. It was released in the wake of the huge success of The Sixth Sense and while it was generally well received by critics, it was considered a box office disappointment at the time.
Despite the small returns, in the years since Unbreakable has become one of Shyamalan’s most beloved films. It has become the definition of a cult classic and many fans (including myself) consider it one of the best comic book movies ever made.
Flash forward to 2016 and Split. Shyamalan had made a comeback of sorts with 2016’s The Visit and followed that up with the story of Kevin Wendell Crumb and the multiple personalities that resided within him, including the super human entity known as The Beast. Split would go on to gross $278.5 million worldwide and was a massive hit with both moviegoers and critics alike.
Which was all well and good. But what got fans really talking was the last scene. The one that confirmed that Split took place in the same universe as Unbreakable. Which meant that fans would finally after almost 20 years get a sequel to one of the best comic book films ever.
On Friday at San Diego Comic-Con International, Universal took the wraps off the first full trailer for Glass, the sequel to both Unbreakable and Split.
As you would fully expect from a film written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, the trailer gives almost nothing away in terms of plot and story. It does show both Mr. Glass and The Horde are in the same prison and that they are getting help from a therapist (played by Sarah Paulson) who specializes in people who think they are superheroes.
When the two inevitably escape, it falls to David Dunn to stop them from killing again.
In addition to the trailer, Universal also released the first poster for the film.
Word is that this will be the final film to take place in the Unbreakable universe as Shyamalan has long said he always pictured the series as a trilogy. It may have taken almost two decades, but moviegoers should be very thankful that at long last we get the conclusion we have all been waiting for.
