CBS debuted a new trailer for the second season of Star Trek: Discovery at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday that re-introduces fans to Captain Pike.

Among Trekkies, the new series Star Trek: Discovery definitely ruffled some feathers.

Not in a Star Wars: The Last Jedi kind of way, but the new series sure did get Star Trek fandom talking. Whether it was the odd pacing of the first season or how exactly the series fits within the continuity of the show, Trek fans had much to talk about.

However, once all was said and done, most fans seemed to enjoy Discovery. CBS considered the show a big enough hit to green light a second season and to give showrunner Alex Kurtzman a five-year deal to expand the Star Trek Universe further.

On Friday, CBD debuted a new trailer for the second season of Star Trek: Discovery at San Diego Comic-Con International. The trailer introduces, or more accurately re-introduces Captain Christopher Pike as he takes over command of the Discovery.

The new trailer sets up the new season by showing us that seven red bursts have suddenly appeared all over the galaxy and that they are somehow tied to Spock, who has coincidentally gone missing.

To get to the bottom of the mystery, Captain Pike arrives with the Enterprise to take over the Discovery. Pike is being played by Anson Mount, who was last seen playing Black Bolt in the (thankfully) short-lived Inhumans television series.

For those who may be in the dark, Christopher Pike was the original Captain of the Enterprise, later replaced by James Kirk. With Discovery taking place a decade prior to the events of the Original Series, Pike is still in command of the Enterprise at this point.

In addition to the new trailer, it was also revealed at the Star Trek panel in Hall H that the second season will see the arrival of not only Spock, but the original Number One. Number One was played by Majel Barrett in the original series pilot and was Pike’s second-in-command. For Discovery the role will be played by Rebecca Romijn while Spock has yet to be cast.

It was also announced that in addition to Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 fans will also be getting four new short films titled Star Trek: Short Treks. Each episode will be roughly 15 minutes long and will look at corners of the Star Trek Universe that Discovery can’t go due to the nature of the story.

All in all, it looks like a pretty good time to be a Star Trek fan. The second season of Discovery it set to arrive on the CBS All Access streaming service in early 2019.
