Fantinuum speaks with The Lost City Explorers creator and writer Zack Kaplan.

Zack Kaplan is relatively new to the comics scene, but he’s already had an outstanding debut with Port of Earth and Eclipse. His latest creation is The Lost City Explorers. Zack recently had a signing at Fantastic Comics in Berkeley, California, where we also got the chance to speak to him about his start in the industry and his influences.

Zack entered the industry two years ago and made multiple pitches. He finally got a bite from Top Cow, an imprint of Image Comics, and sold Eclipse to the publisher. His next book was Port of Earth—a sci-fi tale that asks, “What if the first aliens we make contact with want to make a business deal, but these aliens are the ‘Chevron’ of the galaxy?”

His latest title, published by AfterShock Comics, is The Lost City Explorers—a story about a teen girl named Hel (short for Helen) leading a group of millennials in search of her father, who fell through a portal. The story draws inspiration from multiple genres and pays homage to the likes of The Goonies, Stargate, and Indiana Jones. Check out our full interview with him:

Zack is currently making the rounds at multiple conventions, and he’ll definitely be at the most famous and largest one of all—San Diego Comic-Con—come July. So make sure to stop by his booth where you can get a copy of any of his titles—with the advantage of having them signed and personalized by Zack himself.

Both Eclipse and Port of Earth are now in development to be TV series. The Lost City Explorers #2 will be released on July 18, 2018.

About Steve Lam 105 Articles
The first superhero Steve ever saw was Christopher Reeve's Superman in 1978. Steve was only a year old and couldn't really appreciate history being made. Little did he know at the time, the seed was already planted—which would grow into a lifelong obsession with superheroes and comics. Today, Steve also adds science fiction, horror, and movies to his repertoire of nerdy fanaticism. His dream is to one day sell his novel or screenplay.
