If the final moments of the Supergirl Season 3 finale are any indication, next season will see Kara face off against a Russian version of herself.
SPOILERS for the third season finale of Supergirl. You have been warned.
Well, the Season 3 finale of Supergirl certainly didn’t disappoint.
Reign and the Kryptonian witches were all soundly defeated, Mon-El and Winn headed off to the future to join the Legion of Superheroes while Brainiac 5 decided to stick around in the present. Alex took over running the D.E.O. while J’onn J’onzz takes some time off and Lena Luthor seems destined to embrace her dark lineage.
Oh yeah. And then there was that second Supergirl that showed up in Siberia right before the credits rolled.
Like I said, it was definitely a season finale that gave viewers everything and the kitchen sink.
From almost the moment fans saw the second Kara make her debut, speculation began to run rampant that the producers were going to do an Arrowverse version of the Superman: Red Son storyline in Season 4.
For those who may not be familiar with the story, Superman: Red Son is an Elseworlds tale written by Mark Millar that asked a very simple question: What would happen in Kal-El had landed in the Soviet Union instead of Kansas?
The result was a Soviet Union that almost takes over the entire planet if not for a resistance led by the President of the United States, Lex Luthor.
For their part, Supergirl showrunners Robert Rovner and Jessica Queller have confirmed that yes, Red Son will serve as the inspiration for the upcoming Season 4. While talking with TV Line, the pair confirmed that the teaser at the end of the episode is just the beginning.
“For fans of the comics, I think they might recognize that the story we want to tell is inspired by the iconic DC Comics’ Red Son, which told an alternate origin story for Superman.”
“What happened if — as a baby — Superman landed in Russia and became a hero there instead of in America. It’s an homage to that.”
Of course, Season 4 won’t be able to replicate Superman: Red Son exactly, which is just fine. The various Arrowverse shows have done an excellent job taking storylines from the comics and using them as a springboard to tell stories of their own. Red Son is just the latest example of that.

Currently it isn’t known if the Russian version of Kara will be the main villain of Season 4 or only a small arc within the season. Regardless, it should make for some fun television.
