Wonder Woman 2 officially has a title and in addition, the first images from the set have been released, which includes the return of an old friend.
When Wonder Woman arrived in theaters in June of last year, there was an awful lot riding on the shoulders of both star Gal Gadot and director Patty Jenkins.
Both Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad had opened to big numbers but terrible reviews. While both films were considered hits by the end of their respective runs, Warner Bros. was far from happy about the reaction either movie got from fans.
So there were lots of lofty expectations for Wonder Woman. It was the first superhero film to have a female hero as the lead and Warner Bros. desperately wanted a critical as well as financial hit. It’s not an exaggeration to say that the future of the DC Extended Universe could have been riding on Wonder Woman.
Thankfully, the film was a blockbuster and a hit with just about everyone. It went on to earn $821 million worldwide and sits at an amazing 92 percent “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes.
It didn’t take long for a sequel to be announced and both Gadot and Jenkins were signed to return. The sequel is set to be another tale of Diana’s past and take place in the 1980s during the midst of the Cold War. It was also rumored that Chris Pine’s Steve Trevor would also be pack despite (Spoiler warning!) being killed off in the first film.
With production having officially begun on the sequel, more details are beginning to emerge, including the official title as well as photos from the set.
The film will be titled Wonder Woman 1984 and two photos have been released, including one that confirms the return of Pine to the DCEU.
The first image was released by Gadot on her Twitter feed on Wednesday and features Diana standing in front of a bank of television monitors. While it reveals almost nothing about the plot of the film, the same can’t be said of the next photo.
That one, released by Jenkins on her own Twitter, shows none other than Steve Trevor himself rocking some serious 80s fashions.
As to whether this is the original Steve Trevor back from the dead, his descendant or something else entirely is not known, but it sure will be a lot of fun speculating.
