Bandai Namco has revealed that the next installment in the legendary Soulcalibur fighting franchise will arrive in October of this year.
When it comes to fighting games, few have earned the respect of players like Soulcalibur.
Known for some of the sharpest graphics and tightest controls in the genre, Soulcalibur has been a mainstay of fighting games since 1995 when Soul Edge first arrived in arcades. In the years since, it has been rechristened Soulcalibur and has seen the release of five sequels, the last arriving in 2012.
This is in addition to the many spinoffs, books and soundtracks that have been released over the years to keep Soulcalibur fans happy. But what gamers have really wanted is a proper numbered sequel to play on the latest generation of consoles.
So when Soulcalibur VI was announced last year at the 2017 Game Awards, fans were ecstatic. According to the studio, the sixth entry in the franchise would focus on storytelling elements and will be a celebration of Soulcalibur‘s 20th anniversary.
But when would fans actually get to play the game? All Bandai Namco would say was that Soulcalibur VI would be released sometime in 2018, but nothing more specific that that.
Now we all have an answer.
This week at the E3 Expo Bandai Namco released a new story trailer for the game and low and behold, it included a firm release date of October 19, 2018.
The new trailer features a number of returning fighters, including Taki, Siegfried, Ivy, Zasalamel, Sophitia, Mitsurugi, Nightmare, Xianghua and Kilik as well as new fighter Grøh. It also shows that the game will indeed go into the history and backstory of the Soulcalibur Universe more than previous games in the series have to date.
Thanks to the new trailer, fans also get a look at the Deluxe and Collector’s Editions of the game that will be available. They promise to include a soundtrack, a metal case, a hardcover art book and more. Oddly enough, a season pass, which will include additional fighters and armor packs, will only be made available in the Deluxe Edition.
