At the annual E3 video game showcase, Microsoft announced that the long-awaited Gears of War 5 is on the way as well as two other Gears games.

When most gamers think of the Xbox, one of two games will usually immediately come to mind: Halo and Gears of War.

While Halo may be the flagship franchise of the Xbox, Gear of War will always be a very close second. The original game, released in 2006, was an instant smash that redefined the third-person shooter with huge boss battles and some of the best campaigns ever seen in gaming.

The huge success of Gears of War resulted in three sequels as well as a prequel titled Gears of War: Judgement. However, all has been quiet on the Gears front since 2016 when Gears of War 4 arrived for the Xbox One.

Many fans were wondering when we would get news of a new numbered game in the franchise and if that would be at this year’s E3 Expo, which Microsoft had promised was going to be all about the games this year.

On Sunday at the Xbox E3 press conference, they delivered big time.

Not one but three new Gears games were announced. The first is Gears POP! which will be a mobile game based on the popular Funko line of collectible figures. The second will be Gears Tactics, a PC-exclusive turn-based strategy game that takes place more than a decade before the events of the original Gears of War.

While that was all well and good, fans weren’t really going to be happy unless they got some news about a proper Gears sequel.

So it should come as no surprise that when it was officially announced that Gears of War 5 is on the way and that it will be in players’ hands in 2019, the crowd went a little nuts.

And Microsoft was nice enough to bring a gorgeous announce trailer for the game.

The game will be exclusive to the Xbox just like every other game in the franchise. In addition, it will be available at retail and as part of Xbox Game Pass at launch.

Rod Fergusson, who runs The Coalition, the developer who handles all things Gears of War for Microsoft, said during the press conference that even he is surprised by the new directions Gears is going in.

“Thirteen years ago when I began my Gears of War journey, we had no idea how big this franchise would become. And as it’s grown, we’ve dreamed of taking it to new places in different ways to reach even more fans.”

With three new games on three very distinct platforms, it would appear Fergusson and the team at the Coalition have achieved their goal.
