Marvel has announced a new take on the Guardians of Galaxy, this time with a Norse mythology angle as the new Asgardians Of The Galaxy.
The fact that Marvel Comics can not make a Guardians of the Galaxy ongoing series work is a perfect example of almost everything that is wrong with comic books right now.
Despite two blockbuster movies that are part of the global phenomena that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the last Guardians of the Galaxy title was cancelled because of low sales. Even knowing that the team would appear in Avengers: Infinity War couldn’t seem to help, and the most recent version of the book ended in January of this year.
It would seem that older readers have no interest in the Guardians while fans of the films simply had no idea there was a comic book series about the team.
Typical.
Despite that, Marvel is never one to just let a property sit around not being used. Unless that idea happens to be the Fantastic Four, but that’s an entirely different can of worms.
So when Marvel sent out a cryptic teaser on Wednesday saying that the Guardians are no more and that they would be replaced by a new team called the Asgardians Of The Galaxy, you could practically hear fans collectively rolling their eyes.
However, on Thursday Marvel sent out another teaser with some actual information and a creative team and shockingly, it doesn’t sound that bad.
The new Asgardians Of The Galaxy will be a team made up entirely of characters with some kind of connection to Thor and Asgard. The title will be written by Cullen Bunn with artwork by Matteo Lolli and this new title will spin out of the Infinity Wars super-mega crossover event happening this summer.
The lineup of the new team will be Angela, Valkyrie, Skurge the Executioner, Throg the Frog of Thunder, Kevin Masterson, better known as Thunderstrike and the Destroyer with a mystery pilot.
Of course, the big appeal of this series for many fans will be the fact the Cullen Bunn will once again be writing the adventures of Valkyrie. Bunn did some pretty amazing things with the character in the late, lamented Fearless Defenders series and it will be great to see him be able to pick up those plot threads once again.

And of course, any series that includes Throg immediately goes to the top of my pull list without question.
Can Marvel make this series a hit and avoid the sales issues that plagued the variousĀ Guardians of the Galaxy titles? I guess we’ll all find out this September.
