It has been revealed that Warner Bros. is looking to expand the world of the Suicide Squad beginning with a Joker standalone film starring Jared Leto.
When Suicide Squad arrived in theaters in 2016, it quickly followed the pattern established by the other films in the fledgling DC Extended Universe. It made a ton of money despite being savaged by both the critics and many of the fans who went and saw it.
Despite that, the film is considered by many to be a flawed but watchable entry in the DCEU. And if nothing else, it gave the world Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, who proved popular enough that the character will be getting a spinoff movie of her very own.
It turns out however, that Robbie’s forthcoming Birds of Prey feature was just the first in what is being planned as a series of films branching out of Suicide Squad.
Variety is reporting that Jared Leto is set to star and executive produce a Joker spinoff film. This will be separate from the Joker origin movie currently being developed by director Todd Phillips and will be firmly part of the larger DCEU.
While Leto’s Joker had precious little screen time in Suicide Squad, fans quickly become incredibly enamored with his performance. His version of the character was unlike anything seen before and while it took some getting used to, fans in the end seem to enjoy the new and decidedly unstable take on the Joker.
Despite the fact that Leto wasn’t actually in Suicide Squad all that much, he loved playing the character. So much so that he said more than once that he would love to expand on the role in a more substantial way.
Currently The Joker spinoff doesn’t have a director attached or even a script at this point. With Leto on board the next step is to find a screenwriter and come up with a story. And it has to be mentioned that if this Joker film does end up getting made, an appearance by Batman is practically a must, whether that be by Ben Affleck or whoever takes over the role next.
Also, it wouldn’t be that shocking to see Leto show up in the Birds of Prey movie, possibly to lay the groundwork for his solo film. If Warner Bros. is serious about making Suicide Squad a mini shared universe within the larger DCEU, little touches like that will go a long way towards creating continuity between all the films. Which is something Warner Bros. has not always been that great about.
