After far too long of a wait, the first trailer for The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part has been released and it is more awesome than anyone expected.
If you had told me that one of my favorite movies of all time would turn out to be based on a line of toys, well… I probably would’ve believed you. I mean I own an absurd number of Star Wars action figures.
But when Warner Bros. first announced that they were making an animated film about LEGOs, I’ll readily admit I didn’t think much of it. I just didn’t see the appeal of a movie where the entire plot revolves around little plastic bricks.
That was, until I actually watched The LEGO Movie and was completely blown away.
I was far from the only one. The LEGO Movie went on to earn $469 million worldwide and captured the imagination of just about everyone who saw it.
Almost immediately Warner Bros. announced a sequel was on the way, but it would be without directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller who were busy directing Solo: A Star Wars Story and wouldn’t be available. However, as everyone knows by now, Lord and Miller were fired from Solo and with some unexpected free time on their hands, came in to work on The LEGO Movie 2 script and offer some guidance for new directors Mike Mitchell and Trisha Gum.
The result is The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part which dropped its first official trailer on Tuesday.
The sequel picks up five years after the events of the first film and shows that Bricksburg has became a wasteland and everyone has to fend for themselves and have eyes in the back of their head in this new, dangerous world.
Unless you’re Emmet of course, who is just as blissfully unaware as he was in the first film.
When Wyldstyle and his friends are taken by the LEGO DUPLO invaders from space, it falls to Emmet to mount a rescue and save the world.
And hilarity ensues.
It’s obvious from the trailer that The LEGO Movie 2 embraces the same type of humor that worked so well in the original. The pop culture references fly fast and furious and every indication is that the sequel looks like it will be just as entertaining at the first movie.
More Movies: Solo Officially First Star Wars Flop
Here’s hoping that come February 8, 2019 when The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part hits theaters everywhere, everything will be awesome once again.
