The on-again, off-again reboot of The Crow is once more off-again as star Jason Momoa and Corin Hardy have left the project with Sony not far behind.
It was only March of this year when it seemed like everything was finally falling into place for the long in development reboot of The Crow.
After going through multiple directors, stars and studios, the remake of the film based on James O’Barr’s classic graphic novel seemed ready to move forward. Jason Momoa was signed to star, Corin Hardy was set to direct and Sony Pictures, which rescued the project in the wake of Relativity Media’s bankruptcy last year, had decided on a release date of October 2019.
With everything set, The Crow was deep into pre-production with filming set to begin in a few months in Budapest. It looked for all intents and purposes like The Crow was finally ready to fly again.
Alas, it would seem that fans and even the filmmakers themselves got their hopes up a bit too soon.
It is being reported by Deadline that both Momoa and Hardy have decided to leave the project after creative and financial differences with Samuel Hadida, whose Davis Films owns the rights to The Crow and was financing the film. In addition, Sony is on the verge of pulling out as well, leaving the future of The Crow very much in doubt.
Momoa took to his Instagram to break the sad news to his fans.
News that production of the remake has fallen apart (again) will no doubt be welcomed by many fans of Eric Draven. Alex Proyas, who directed the original back in 1994, has been saying for years that any kind of remake of reboot is a bad idea and disrespectful to the memory to Brandon Lee, who died during filming.
Of course, the likelihood is that at some point a remake of The Crow is going to happen, but exactly when is anyone’s guess. With Momoa and Hardy out and Sony not far behind, it leaves the entire project essentially back at square one. Unless Hadida can perform some kind of miracle, there is no way The Crow will hit a release date of October 11, 2019.
