Colin Trevorrow Discusses Exiting Star Wars: Episode IX

After almost a year, Colin Trevorrow finally talked about leaving the Star Wars franchise and what working on Episode IX meant to him.

Sometimes it feels like a day doesn’t go by anymore without some kind of news about a director associated with Star Wars.

You would have thought finding directors to work on the films would have been easy. I mean, this is Star Wars. Most of the current generation of filmmakers grew up on Star Wars and wanted to make movies just like them.

Instead, it has been one fiasco after another for Lucasfilm and the studio’s president Kathleen Kennedy.

From firing Phil Lord and Christopher Miller from Solo: A Star Wars Story when production was almost finished to the extensive reshoots that plagued Rogue One to the fan backlash that was aimed at The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson after the film’s release, it seems as if Lucasfilm has had no luck when it comes to picking someone to sit in the director’s chair.

The latest filmmaker to hit the news is Colin Trevorrow, who was originally supposed to direct Star Wars: Episode IX for release next summer.

Instead, it will be J.J. Abrams who will be directing Episode IX for a December 2019 release.

As most fans are aware, Trevorrow was announced as the director of Episode IX shortly after Jurassic World became a box office smash in 2015. Everything seemed fine until Carrie Fisher unexpectedly passed away in late 2016. At that point the script that had been almost finished had to be reworked almost from scratch.

Combine that with Trevorrow’s The Book of Henry being a box office and critical failure as well as rumors that Kennedy was unhappy with the script and the director saw the writing on the wall. It was announced in September of 2017 that Trevorrow was stepping aside from the project and was shortly thereafter replaced by Abrams.

In the months since, the director has remained quiet about the circumstances of his exiting the film. Rumors have run rampant but despite that, Trevorrow will now direct Jurassic World 3, so he would appear to be doing just fine.

So it should come as no surprise that Trevorrow’s first words on the subject are somewhat vague and doesn’t lay the blame at anyone’s feet.

Speaking to Empire, Trevorrow opened up about working on Episode IX for the first time and how much it meant to him.

“I don’t want to talk too much about it because I don’t want to affect the way that fans get to see these films. When we were kids, these movies came to us from far away. They were a gift. And the more we talk about how they’re made, the more it reveals that they’re just movies. But they’re not just movies, they’re more than that. Beyond that, I got the opportunity to tell a story that is a celebration of everything I believe in, I got to tell it to George Lucas and I got to tell it to Luke Skywalker, and those are experiences I will cherish for the rest of my life.”

Sounds to me like Trevorrow has moved on and doesn’t really have much to say about the subject other than he enjoyed it and will always appreciate the opportunity.

Which is a bit refreshing if we’re being honest.

Star Wars: Episode IX is set to hit theaters on December 20, 2019. Unless they decide to fire Abrams, in which case it could be longer.
