Supergirl Returns With New Creative Team, Direction

This August, the ongoing Supergirl title will be making a comeback with a brand new creative team, a new direction and a bunch of new costumes.

Turns out you should never count the Girl of Steel down for the count.

It was widely reported last February that the ongoing Supergirl title was going to be cancelled as a consequence of the arrival of Brian Michael Bendis on Superman and Action Comics. It joined Super Sons and New Super-Man and the Justice League of China in the cancellation pile as Bendis took over control of not just the Man of Steel but apparently the entire Superman family of characters.

Now it looks like that thinking may have been a bit premature.

It was announced earlier Monday that Super Sons would return this August as a 12-issue miniseries by Peter Tomasi and Carlo Barberi. That surprise has been followed by the news on SyFy Wire that Supergirl would also be making a comeback.

Supergirl will return to comic shops this August with issue #21 by the incoming creative team of Marc Andreyko and Kevin Maguire. The book will have a brand new direction that will take the character into outer space looking for information on Rogol Zaar, a new villain introduced in The Man of Steel miniseries that Bendis is currently working on.

As if that wasn’t enough “new” for you, Supergirl will also be getting not one, not two but four new costumes over the course of the storyline. The new outfits, thought not permanent, are all designed by Jorge Jimenez and will be a result of events that happen in the story.

SyFy Wire spoke to Andreyko about the storyline and what readers can expect from the relaunched title.

This Supergirl book spins directly out of the events in Man of Steel, so the books are very complementary to each other. I’m following Brian’s lead, and he’s got a lot of epic stuff planned for Superman. And while the books are complementary to each other, you don’t have to read both to enjoy them, but if you do, you’ll enjoy the story more. The first year of the book is definitely tied in to things that are revealed during the Man of Steel miniseries.

She’s trying to learn why he does what he does, where he comes from, and if there’s anyone else involved with him. It’s a detective story in space. She’s looking for answers to the questions that have been raised by Rogol Zaar. There will be familiar faces, some new faces, all sorts of challenges facing her, and also some potentially new supporting characters who will hopefully be well received and stick around for a while.

In addition, Andreyko discussed why the criminally underrated Maguire was the perfect choice to illustrate this story.

Basically, the right artist for any project is Kevin Maguire. He’s an absolute genius, an under appreciated genius. If you told me I could go back in time and tell 16-year-old me that I would be working with the artist from Justice League: International, I would be like, “C’mon. That would never happen.”

He has some of the best grasp of facial expressions and character acting of almost any artist working in the business. Working with someone I’ve admired for more than half my life is a win-win. Plus, he wants to draw Supergirl. He’s excited because it’s one of the few DC characters he hasn’t drawn extensively. To collaborate with someone who has that much talent and experience is just a privilege.

Considering DC stupidly cancelled that New 52 Supergirl title shortly before the character began starring in her own television series, the odds were she wouldn’t be out of the spotlight for long. DC has always learned from there mistakes and you can bet as long as there is a Supergirl series on The CW, there will be a Supergirl comic on the stands.

Supergirl #21 arrives in comic shops and digital devices this coming August.
