The highly anticipated sequel Deadpool 2 opened in a big way, finally ending the run of Avengers: Infinity War as the box office champion.

As they say, all good thing must come to an end.

This past weekend, that was the case for Avengers: Infinity War, which had ruled the box office as the number one movie for three consecutive weeks. The latest from the Marvel/Disney hit machine finally fell to number two, earning $28.7 million to bring its domestic total to an astounding $595 million. Sure, that may still be less than the worldwide phenomenon that is Black Panther, but I don’t think you’ll here anyone at Marvel Studios complaining.

So what movie finally took down Earth’s Mightiest Heroes?

Would you believe an R-rated superhero sequel where the breakout star is an ordinary guy named Peter?

Deadpool 2, the follow-up to the 2016 monster hit, earned an amazing $125 million by the time the weekend was over. That’s down just 5 percent from the $132.4 million the original brought in and was good enough for the second best opening ever for an R-rated film. Combine that with the $176 million it earned overseas and Deadpool 2 finished the weekend with a $301 million haul.

And all that was before the Memorial Day weekend.

Helping matters was the fact that the reviews for Deadpool 2 were pretty much outstanding across the board. The film is sitting at 83 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and earned an “A” CinemaScore from audiences.

The fact Deadpool 2 is doing so well should come as no surprise to anyone. Despite Deadpool director Tim Miller leaving the project early on due to “creative differences” with star and executive producer Ryan Reynolds, it doesn’t seem to have hurt the sequel at all.

In fact, many are saying Deadpool 2 pulls off the incredibly rare Hollywood feat of actually being better than the original.

Deadpool 2 and The Godfather Part II. Bet you never thought you’d see those two movies mentioned in the same sentence.

More Movies: Deadpool 2 Review

With no other superhero fare to offer competition until Ant-Man and the Wasp opens in July, Deadpool 2 could have a long successful run. It likely won’t repeat Infinity War‘s run at the top spot, not with Solo: A Star Wars Story opening next week, but the movie will undoubtedly be one of the bigger hits of the summer of 2018.

Of course, with all the problems the have plagued Solo, anything could happen.
