Marvel Teases Death Of The Inhumans This July

It looks like The Inhumans may not be getting a “Fresh Start” and instead might be taking a collective dirt nap if a new Marvel teaser is accurate.

Ever since the earliest days of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I’ve felt sorry for the Inhumans.

See, the MCU doesn’t have any mutants thanks to the fact 20th Century Fox owns the film rights to the X-Men and all related characters. As a result, all the heroes and villains of the MCU have gotten their various powers other ways.

At some point, Marvel decided it needed to create a kind of “stand in” for the mutants of the Marvel Universe and the Inhumans were chosen. They were given a huge role to play in the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. television show and began starring in a number of ongoing comic book titles. The idea was to get readers and moviegoers interested in the concept and then Marvel Studios will have a mutant race to call their own.

The one problem? No one gives a crap about the Inhumans.

All of their assorted comic book titles were cancelled due to low sales or just lack of interest with the latest being Black Bolt. The live-action version didn’t fare any better, with The Inhumans television series cancelled because no one (and I mean no one) watched it.

Now with Disney possibly buying Fox and getting all their mutants back to play with in the MCU, the need for the Inhumans has gone away. And it would seem that Marvel plans to make it a permanent vacation for the characters.

On Wednesday Marvel released a teaser for Death of the Inhumans which will arrive in July of this year. It has Donny Cates (who has apparently become the new Brian Michael Bendis of Marvel) listed as the writer and Ariel Olivetti as the artist with a cover by Kaare Andrews. We’re going to assume this is a one-shot and not a miniseries seeing as they mention only a single cover artist.

Of course, Marvel has killed plenty of characters only to bring them back. This could simply be a way to make the Inhumans go away until someone can figure out something interesting to do with them. Which, if history is any barometer, is not as easy as it sounds.
