When Karen Gillan took the role of Nebula in Guardians of the Galaxy, she went in with no clue how important Nebula was to the overall MCU.
Ever since the earliest days of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, what at first seem to be small, inconsequential characters have quickly transformed into key roles in the ongoing superhero epic.
Did anyone really think after Clark Gregg’s Phil Coulson made his debut in the first Iron Man that he would go on to be the reason the Avengers assembled? Or that Peggy Carter would go from a supporting role in Captain America: The First Avenger to headline her own network television show?
In the MCU, any character can become much more than they first appear. Even when the actor playing the role may not realize it.
This was the case with Karen Gillan when she was cast as Nebula, the daughter of Thanos in the original Guardians of the Galaxy. Even though comic book fans are well aware of the significance Nebula plays in the Infinity Gauntlet miniseries, folks who are just aware of the movies likely had no clue of her importance in relation to the Mad Titan.
And apparently, this included Gillan.
Gillan recently spoke to Screen Rant about the release of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle on home video and talk about Avengers: Infinity War came up. They asked Gillan if she knew how important Nebula was to the overall story of the MCU and she admitted to having no clue.
“I had no idea that this was where the character was going. I genuinely signed onto the role thinking it was eight days of filming and then I was going to die in the first Guardians. Three movies later and there’s three more to come out it’s, like, crazy. It’s funny because I read the Infinity Gauntlet, which is what the new Avengers films are based on, as research for my character because it’s her sort of biggest moment within the Marvel comic book world, and then to find out they’re making a double-bill feature based on that, I was just so excited actually because Nebula gets some really cool stuff.”
At this point there is no way of knowing if Infinity War and Avengers 4 will follow the storyline of Infinity Gauntlet and will see Nebula eventually usurp the power of the Infinity Stones for herself. While the movie and the comic it’s based on have a lot of similarities, there are enough differences to know anything could happen.
Gillan is confirmed to be in both Avengers sequels and, if we read between the lines, it sure sounds like Nebula will be back for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Up till now the character has only been seen briefly in the spot that aired during the Super Bowl so it’s not really possible to ascertain what role she will play in Infinity War.
