Even Benedict Cumberbatch Doesn’t Know About Doctor Strange 2

While Marvel has announced sequels for Spider-Man and the Guardians of the Galaxy, oddly there has been no word on a Doctor Strange 2.

So how many times have you watched the new trailer for Avengers: Infinity War? Ten times? Twenty?

Personally I’m already into triple digits but hey, that’s just me.

Anyway, one of the many, many reasons the Infinity War trailer is so cool is thanks to the return of Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange. Other than a few guest appearances here and there, the good Doctor hasn’t been heard from since his own film hit theaters way back in 2016.

Which may not seem all that long ago but in shared cinematic universe terms, it’s a lifetime.

Marvel president Kevin Feige has made it very clear that once the dust settles from Avengers 4 next year, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is going to be a very different place. Phase Three and the Thanos storyline will likely be over and whatever shape Phase Four takes will feature new heroes and possibly new versions of old favorites.

But despite that, a few films have already been announced, including a sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming and a third volume of Guardians of the Galaxy. You can bet cash money that a second Black Panther film will also be included as well as a third Ant-Man and a follow-up to Captain Marvel.

So where the hell is Doctor Strange 2?

You would have thought that after the film made over $677 million worldwide, a sequel would have been announced almost immediately. However, that didn’t happen and instead fans were told that Stephen Strange would instead be back in Avengers: Infinity War.

So what is going on? When can moviegoers expect to see Doctor Strange battling the forces of evil solo again?

It turns out not even the film’s star knows.

Cumberbatch recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly about all things Infinity War and was asked point blank what the status of Doctor Strange 2 was. His answer was not exactly encouraging.

Not at the moment, no. The masterplan is continually in flux, so it would be out of order for me to speculate.

I mean, they have to make a second Doctor Strange, right? With so many characters rumored to be making their final bow in Infinity War, the MCU needs new heroes such as Doctor Strange to replace them.

Hopefully Marvel will make their plans for Phase Four clear once Avengers: Infinity War hits cineplexes on April 27. Until then, fans will just have to hope that Doctor Strange makes it out of the upcoming battle against Thanos in one piece.
