Sony Pictures has set an October, 2019 release date for the long-gestating reboot of James O’Barr’s The Crow starring Jason Momoa.
It looks like the reboot of The Crow may finally, really, honestly be this close to actually getting made.
Of course, we’ve said that before.
For years now various parties have been trying to get the project off the ground, but a string of bad luck has seemingly cursed the production. The reboot has gone through a literal who’s who of various directors and stars as well as the bankruptcy of Relativity Media last year.
One of the last updates revealed that Corin Hardy (The Hallow) was signed to direct The Crow with Jason Momoa (Aquaman, Game of Thrones) set to star as antihero Eric Draven. Of course, when Relativity went bankrupt and Sony Pictures picked up the project, you can be forgiven if you thought it would lead to yet more delays.
But it would seem that Sony is very intent on getting The Crow into production and has even set an actual for real release date for the movie to hit theaters.
Sony announced on Friday that The Crow will arrive in your local cineplex on October 11, 2019.
The original Crow film, based on the graphic novel by O’Barr, was released way back in 1994 and starred Brandon Lee as Draven with Alex Proyas behind the camera. The movie became a cult classic due to not only the stylish, gothic visuals the film employed but the fact that Lee was killed during filming, which made his performance as Eric all the more haunting.
In the years since, several sequels were made as well as a television series but none proved as popular as the first film. Hence the reboot that goes back to the source materiel and promises to be more faithful to O’Barr’s original vision.
For his part Proyas has come out against the idea of a remake, but that has more to do with honoring the memory of Brandon Lee than see the movie remade by someone else.
Despite all the obstacles, it looks like The Crow is finally ready to fly again. The film is set to begin filming later this year in Budapest and you can be sure more casting news will be revealed soon.
More Comics: Cosmic Ghost Rider Is Getting His Own Miniseries
While I’m not 100 percent sold on Momoa as Draven, if Hardy can surround him with really solid co-stars and give moviegoers an authentic version of The Crow, Sony could have a chance to have a real hit on their hands.
And then they can announce the Crow shared cinematic universe shortly thereafter.
