The script for Star Wars: Episode IX has been completed so director J.J. Abrams is ready to get behind the camera and begin filming this July.
Even before Star Wars: The Last Jedi divided fans and made some swear to never go see another Star Wars movie as long as they lived, there was trouble brewing in a galaxy far, far away.
Back in September, just as the furor over the extensive reshoots that took place for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story had begun to die down, Lucasfilm dropped another bombshell on their fans. Director Colin Trevorrow, who was set to direct Episode IX, was let go from the project.
Turns out the director of Jurassic World was having “creative differences” with the folks at Lucasfilm over the direction of the movie and the two decided to part ways. And this was after Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were fired from Solo: A Star Wars Story despite 80 percent of the filming being completed and replaced by Ron Howard.
So who could Lucasfilm find to come in and save Episode IX who they knew they could trust and get the project back on track?
Turns out they didn’t have to go far. It was announced shorty thereafter that J.J. Abrams would return to bring the newest Star Wars trilogy to a close. He would direct the film and co-write the script with Chris Terrio. The release date was pushed back to December and the duo got to work.
And now, according to Abrams, that work has been completed and filming can begin.
The director appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and revealed that the script for Episode IX is done and that filming will begin in July.
“We have a script, which is a big deal for me. It’s starts shooting end of July.”
“Having a script in advance isn’t something I’ve always been lucky enough to have… but I’m writing this with Chris Terrio, who’s a genius, and I’m having a great time.”
Abrams has been adamant that the vision he has for Episode IX was not going to be changed despite the criticism leveled, some would say unfairly, at Rian Johnson and what he did in The Last Jedi. However, Johnson must have done something right seeing as Lucasfilm has given him an entire new Star Wars trilogy to make featuring new characters and situation once Episode IX hits theaters.

Even so, there is a lot of baggage from The Last Jedi that Abrams will have to address, such as the fate of Luke Skywalker, how the death of Carrie Fisher will be handled and the final destinies of both Rey and Kylo Ren.
Looks like we won’t have to wait much longer for the answers we seek.
Star Wars: Episode IX opens in theaters everywhere on Dec. 20, 2019.
