The official announcements have begun for Marvel’s “fresh start” with the latest being a new Venom series with a brand new first issue.

Announced on Tuesday, Marvel Comics is giving their entire superhero universe a “fresh start” as they are calling it with new creative teams, new directions and yes, new first issues.

The first announcement out of the gate was a new Avengers series by Jason Aaron and Ed McGuinness. And next up for the publisher, as revealed by Comic Book.com, is a new Venom series.

Venom #1 will arrive in comic stores this spring and will be written by Donny Cates (Doctor Strange) with artwork by Ryan Stegman (Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows,Uncanny Avengers).

The series will feature Eddie Brock as the host of the symbiote and will show their battle with an ancient evil from the past of the Marvel Universe. It also promises to look into the relationship between Brock and the alien and changes that are occurring in their partnership.

When asked by Comic Book.com, Cates explained the premise like this:

“Things are not great for Eddie as our story begins. Something has happened to his other that….well, I don’t want to spoil too much, but for the first time in a very long time, Eddie is scared of his own shadow. Something is changing between them. And it’s…disturbing, to say the least. But I wouldn’t necessarily say that it’s a symbiote-focused story really. The greatest Venom stories, to me at least, are a mixture of the alien outside and the human inside.

“And that’s something that’s incredibly important to Ryan and I. We’ll be delving into what makes Eddie tick as much as we’ll be uncovering the mysteries of his other. Both of these characters have so much darkness in their past, you know? There’s a reason they are attracted to one another the way they are. There’s a reason they need each other.”

With Venom celebrating his 30th anniversary and a major motion picture set to hit theaters, 2018 looks to be a big year for the character. Of course, it remains to be seen if a big budget movie or a new first issue will translate into readers for the comic book series.

Getting fans of the various Marvel films to set foot in a comic book store has proven incredibly difficult for the publisher and in many ways is part of the reason for the repeated relaunches and reboots of the entire line.

Unfortunately, if you weren’t a fan of the Venom comic book before, it doesn’t seem like there is a heck of a lot here to make you one now.
