Marvel To Relaunch Entire Comics Line (Again) In May 2018

Marvel Comics

Only eight months after Marvel Legacy, Marvel has announced that they will be relaunching all their series yet again with new first issues.

How many times can a a comic book publisher relaunch their entire line of titles before it gets old?

If you’re Marvel Comics, the answer is apparently never.

Marvel announced on Tuesday that they are getting off to a “fresh start” in May of 2018. The press release promises “New Creative Teams, New Series, New Directions, New Beginnings” for the publisher’s entire line of titles. Marvel also released an announcement video featuring new Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski and Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada.

While the original announcement was light on actual information, later the same day IGN revealed that the flagship title of the initiative will be an all new Avengers #1.

The new Avengers series will be the only title to bear that name (for now) and will be written by Jason Aaron with artwork by Ed McGuinness. The series will see the return of the classic versions of the Big Three to the book, that being Captain America, Iron Man and Thor as well as Captain Marvel, Black Panther, the Robbie Reyes version of Ghost Rider, She-Hulk and Doctor Strange.

While talking with IGN about the series, Aaron said he wants Avengers to be the gateway title into the larger Marvel Universe for readers.

“We wanted to get back to a small, core lineup. With big, iconic characters at the heart of that. So we get Steve, Tony, and Thor Odinson back together at the heart of this new team, and the rest of the team we build around them over the course of the first arc. My aim with this series is basically, if you only read one Marvel comic — not that you should read just one Marvel comic, but if you did — if you picked this book up, this would show you the landscape of the Marvel universe issue after issue. We want to feature the biggest characters and go to the coolest, most exotic locations around the Marvel U.”

The article also confirmed what many readers fully expect when they hear the words “relaunch” and “Marvel.” That being that the entire Marvel line of comics will once again get brand new first issues as part of this “fresh start.”

Obviously sales must not have been what Marvel was expecting for the various titles that made up Marvel Legacy. January saw the cancellation of a number of books and rumors persisted that more were coming down the pike.

This will be the publisher’s second major relaunch in just eight months and it really has to make fans wonder what the hell is going on at Marvel Comics. It is starting to feel like they are just throwing things up against the wall and seeing what sticks at this point. It is safe to assume that the massive success Marvel has had in movie theaters is not translating to the comic book stores.

Marvel’s “fresh start” begins in May of 2018. Keep it here at The Fanboy Review for more information as it becomes available.
