Gwendoline Christie Wants Captain Phasma To Return

In a recent interview, Gwendoline Christie talked about how she really, really wants to see Captain Phasma return for Star Wars: Episode IX.

When the character of Captain Phasma made her debut in the opening moments of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, few could see that the chrome-plated stormtrooper would become one of the most popular characters to emerge from the film.

Much like Boba Fett before her, Phasma became a Star Wars icon despite the fact that she did almost nothing of any importance in the film. Sure, she shut down the shields when captured by Han and Finn, but other than that, what did she really do?

That minor detail didn’t stop fans from making Captain Phasma hugely popular, so much so that she was featured not only in a prose novel of her very own, but starred in a Marvel comic book series as well.

So when it was revealed that Phasma would be back for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, fans were ecstatic. Finally we would get to see Gwendoline Christie’s stormtrooper captain on the big screen once again and hopefully she’d play a much more bigger and important part of the story.

And while yes, Captain Phasma was indeed in The Last Jedi, it was for all of about 10 minutes before she seemingly plunged to a fiery death while battling her old nemesis Finn.

For Phasma fans, that was kind of a bummer.

While the fate of Captain Phasma seems to be sealed, many are hoping that somehow, director J.J. Abrams will bring her back for an appearance in Star Wars: Episode IX.

Including Christie herself.

In a recent interview with The Times, Christie was asked about playing the character and if she would be back for Episode IX.

“In truth, I don’t know. And that scares and upsets me because I really want to see this character explored. I’m actually very invested in the character now. And that’s genuine. That’s not just chat. It has opened up a chain of stories and events in my mind about who Phasma is.”

The fate of Captain Phasma is just one of the laundry list of issues some Star Wars fans had with The Last Jedi. Some are looking to Abrams to “fix” the damage they feel director Rian Johnson did to the franchise by undoing some of that happened in Episode VIII.

While it remains to be seen if that will be the case, you can be sure that if Abrams can figure out a way to do it, there is a good chance he would bring Phasma back once again.

The last thing anyone wants is for such a great character with so many possibilities to rot in the Sarlacc Pit with that other great character that got the shaft in the end.

Star Wars: Episode IX arrives in a galaxy near you on Dec. 20, 2019.
