On Tuesday Marvel Studios gave fans their first look at Ant-Man and the Wasp, and every indication is that the Disney has another hit on their hands.
Of all the films that Marvel Studios has released so far, Ant-Man may have had the toughest road to the big screen.
First director Edgar Wright, who had long championed the project, left Ant-Man due to creative differences with Marvel. He was subsequently replaced by Peyton Reed, but many fans felt that losing Wright was a blow that the film wouldn’t be able to overcome.
Then there was the fact that the movie was about Ant-Man, a hero who never exactly set the world of comic books on fire. Sure, Marvel had made box office stars out of the Guardians of the Galaxy, but would anyone really show up to watch a movie about a guy who can shrink?
Turns out yes they would.
Ant-Man went on to make $519.3 million at the worldwide box office and was one of the big surprise hits of the summer of 2015. The character would go on to be featured in Captain America: Civil War and was responsible for what many consider one of the best moments of the movie.
So of course no one was shocked when Marvel announced that a sequel would join the already crowded Phase Three slate. What did surprise many was that Ant-Man would be getting a partner in the new film.
On Tuesday, Marvel dropped the first official trailer for Ant-Man and the Wasp, which sees the return of all the major actors from the first film as well as newcomers Michelle Pfeiffer, Laurence Fishburne, Walton Goggins and Hannah John-Kamen.
Watching the trailer, you can see that Scott, Hope and Hank Pym are still dealing with the fallout from Civil War. The new Wasp costume is on full display here with Evangeline Lilly clearly the focus of the trailer. And why not? Seeing the Wasp in action is something fans have been waiting for ever since the post-credit scene in the original Ant-Man.
The sequel is being billed as a “romantic-comedy” which considering Ant-Man and the Wasp comes out just two months after Avengers: Infinity War, isn’t the worst idea in the world. You can be sure even the most hardcore Marvel fan may need a break after what is sure to be over the top, wall-to-wall action in the third Avengers film.

The Ant-Man sequel will be the third and final film from Marvel Studios to arrive in 2018, with Captain Marvel not scheduled for release until March of 2019. That means having to go just a bit less than a year without a Marvel movie fix, so prepare yourselves now.
Ant-Man and the Wasp arrives in theaters everywhere on July 6, 2018.
