Check out our unboxing of Funko’s Collector Corps October 2017 “Thor: Ragnarok” box which contains exclusive collectible items.
Funko has a very electrifying (pun intended) collection for us this month. I’ll admit, Thor (2011) and Thor: The Dark World (2013) weren’t the best the Marvel Cinematic Universe had to offer. They were passable stories for the God of Thunder. However, the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok is a whole different beast. From the onset of its first teaser trailer, fans knew they were in store for something different—and it seems early reviews has it pegged as one of the best MCU installments to-date.
Critics are only one slice from the pie of success. The ones who truly matter are the fans—who’ll be seeing our Asgardian hero (teamed up with the Jade Giant) on the silver screen in less than two weeks. To celebrate this film of titans, Funko brings us their Marvel Collector Corps “Thor: Ragnarok” box.
It should be noted that this is probably one of the smallest, if not the smallest, boxes that Funko has sent its subscribers. However, as the old adage goes, “Good things come in small packages.” Read on, and you’ll find out why this box offers fans something new and will also satisfy Pop! collectors.
WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD
The Unboxing!
As noted from Funko marketing managers, they’re trying something new: they’ll be mixing up their offerings which means not all boxes will contain the past customary staples of patches and pins.
Opening the lid, we find the packing slip which advertises the next Collector Corps theme—the Hulk! Removing the packing slip, we’re greeted with a new clothing item—a beanie (if memory serves, a first from the company). Taking that out, we have a set of magnets. After removing those, we see two Pop! figures (didn’t I say Pop! collectors will be pleased?). The surprises aren’t over yet. Removing the Pop! figures, we find other small items: a fidget spinner, playing cards, and pin—all Thor: Ragnarok-themed.
Now, we’ll dig into each item …
The Details!
Collector Corps “Thor: Ragnarok” Packing Slip
The packing slip shows how both the Thor and Loki Pop!s were created, as well as the various other items in the box—beanie, fidget spinner, pin, and magnets. The Thor figure is one of the more colorful and intricately detailed Pop!s. It’s always fun to see the original chaser sculpt compared to the final product.
Flipping the packing slip over, we see a prominent picture of Thor: Ragnarok‘s incarnation of the Hulk, but it’s a promotion for December 2017’s Collector Corps box—for the Hulk in every incarnation. Hey, the pic is still our favorite Gamma-ray-enhanced hero so I’m not complaining.
Collector Corps “Thor: Ragnarok” Beanie
This seems to be a first for Funko. We’ve had t-shirts and baseball caps, but never beanies. This one has some alien writing on the front and back, and the front patch is a rubber Pop!-ified Hulk. The material is quite thick and has a nice tight weave. It can definitely withstand some chilly mornings and be used for some winter sports.
Collector Corps “Thor: Ragnarok” Magnets
Here’s another first: magents. We have Thor, Hulk, Loki, and Hela. All are in their Pop!-ified forms. The magnetic material covers the overall decoration so it’s not some cardboard or decorative face with a bit of magnet material. These will definitely look great on any Marvel fan’s fridge.
Collector Corps “Thor: Ragnarok” Fidget Spinner
Granted, I’m not the type who constantly needs stimulation. But, in this case, I’ll make an exception since this fidget spinner is decorated with the Pop!-ified characters from the film. On one side, we have Thor, Hulk, and Valkyrie. On the other, we have Loki, Hela, and Grandmaster.
Collector Corps “Thor: Ragnarok” Pin
This month’s pin is plain and simple. I like that the overall shape frames Hela’s headdress which is adorned with those intricately angled horns. This seems to be one thing that Funko has kept consistent with their box refresh in terms of offering new items.
Collector Corps “Thor: Ragnarok” Playing Cards
Now, I thought it was kind of strange they offered playing cards for this month’s box, so I gave it some thought. Could Funko be giving us some hidden messages? And then it dawned on me—could the offering of playing cards be alluding to a game? This might be far-fetched, but pitting Thor against the Hulk may just be some sort of galactic gladiator game in this new film.
Collector Corps “Thor: Ragnarok” Pop! 247 Thor Figure
As I said before, the Thor Pop! has a pretty intricate paint job. His new helmet, armor, and cloak have been faithfully Pop!-ified and reproduced. The paint is meticulously applied with no sloppy “coloring outside of the lines” look. The only thing un-Thor-like are the weapons he’s wielding—and that’s perfectly understandable. Man, I really want to see and know how Hela actually destroys Mjölnir.
Collector Corps “Thor: Ragnarok” Pop! 248 Loki Figure
Probably one of the best villains … err … anti-villains-heroes (if that’s even a thing) … returns! Thor’s brother from another mother (and father) will be making his usual wisecracks and snarky observations. From the trailers, it looks like it will be an eventual team-up with Thor, Hulk, and Valkyrie. I wonder if Hulk will bring up past history and rub it in. You know … that he threw Loki around like a ragdoll in Avengers (2012)? Whatever it is, this Pop! does the character total justice. Sporting two daggers in his hands, the prankster god is ready for battle.
Final Round-Up
The beanie, magnets, fidget spinner, pin, and playing cards were interesting, but the real stars of the show were the Thor and Loki Pop!s. Funko is really showing off its sophistication with the new detailed paint jobs. I’m one of those rare collectors who actually likes popular characters to show up in blind boxes. I know most people want the one-offs (villains and side characters because they’re rare). For me, if it’s a box dedicated to a hero, I want that hero to be the primary focus—after all, that’s what attracted me to the offering in the first place. In this respect, Funko has never disappointed me.
But the real takeaway is two Pop!s! That’s all I’m going to say. I’ll always be happy when I can get multiple Pop!s and Dorbz figures from one box. If not, I’ll definitely settle for one Pop! Ridez or one Dorbz Ridez. The figures and Funko’s design is what I’m going for. Since Funko is really mixing it up, I wonder if they’ll one day offer a box that has three figures … wink, wink, nudge, nudge.
More Funko: DC’s Legion of Collectors September 2017 Unboxing
Not convinced yet? Due to the items being exclusive and unique to this offering, we’re going to do a theoretical breakdown in price using comparable items found on Amazon and Ebay:
- “Thor: Ragnarok” Beanie: $6.99–$11.99
- “Thor: Ragnarok” Magnets: $4.99–$6.99
- “Thor: Ragnarok” Fidget Spinner: $4.99–$12.99
- “Thor: Ragnarok” Pin: $4.00–$5.00
- “Thor: Ragnarok” Playing Cards: $4.00–$6.00
- “Thor: Ragnarok” Pop! 247 Thor Figure: $11.95–$22.95
- “Thor: Ragnarok” Pop! 248 Loki Figure: $20.00–$25.00
Using the lower-end of the pricing, all items add up to be $56.92. The Loki Pop! seems to be consistently higher priced than the Thor Pop!. This only proves that the character has really resonated with fans (like that needed to be said). Whatever the reasons, I’m sure any character in this highly anticipated movie will become loved by all after the film is released.
It may be one of the smallest boxes to come from Funko, but the two Pop!s are what really count. Because the company isn’t consistently offering t-shirts and patches, it makes the overall unboxing that much more surprising. I’m definitely looking forward to December 2017’s “Hulk” box!
