DC Comics will give Action Comics #1000 a star-studded celebration.
It’s hard to believe that the granddaddy of all superheroes—Superman—will be turning 80 years old in 2018. The Man of Steel looks great for his age. I guess contrary to popular belief, exposure to excessive amounts of solar radiation since his birth in Action Comics #1 (1938) actually does the body good … I kid, I kid … Superman fans obviously know what I mean.
When 2018 rolls around, not only will Superman be celebrating eight decades of awesome existence, but his originating comic book—Action Comics—will also be having a milestone event: it will hit #1000. This will be the first superhero comic book to reach that number! To really honor these two special markers, DC Comics will be dedicating a range of special titles in March 2018. One of them will be a hardcover exclusive which was announced in an official press release:
New hardcover book: Join us for an 80th anniversary celebration of the single most important comic in American history: ACTION COMICS #1 and the birth of Superman. Revisit classic stories from over the decades featuring the debuts of Superman, Supergirl, Brainiac, the Fortress of Solitude, the Human Target and so much more. Read Superman stories by generations of top writers and artists and enjoy sparkling essays from literary wizards who’ve won Pulitzers and become bestsellers, including Jules Feiffer. Plus a historical essay by guest editor Paul Levitz, and all 1000 ACTION covers collected in a new poster. And as a bonus, an UNPUBLISHED 1940s Superman tale believed to be by Jerry Siegel and the Joe Shuster studio salvaged from the DC files fifty years ago and hidden away until now.
In addition to this special offering, Action Comics #1000 will feature some of the biggest names in comics today:
ACTION COMICS #1000, written by Pete Tomasi and Dan Jurgens, will be published as a special, oversized edition featuring an all-star talent line-up writing back-up stories, including a story co-written by Geoff Johns and Superman film director, Richard Donner.
DC Comics also released a special logo paying homage to the Man of Tomorrow’s first appearance.
Created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, Superman made his debut in Action Comics #1 (dated June 1938, but published on April 18, 1938). Originally, multiple newspaper syndicates rejected the character of Superman. However, after the publication of Action Comics #1 by DC Comics (then known as Detective Comics, Inc.), the Man of Steel immediately shot to fame.
Superman, through the years, would become one of the most popular and iconic figures in the world. He’s also the prime template of which all subsequent superheroes were based on. Today, his “S” sigil is the second most identified symbol in the world, the first being the Christian cross. And what about Action Comics #1? On August 24, 2014, a near mint condition copy sold for $3,207,852 on eBay. That’s not a bad investment for something that was originally worth $.10.
Action Comics #1000 will be released sometime in March 2018 so mark your calendars!
