We unbox and review Funko’s latest line of Trollhunters Tales of Arcadia Mystery Minis.
Funko’s Mystery Minis line of blind boxes venture into their latest offering—Trollhunters Tales of Arcadia. The Netflix original series, Trollhunters, from Guillermo del Toro follows the adventures of Jim Lake, Jr.—a high school teen who is “chosen” by an amulet to become a Trollhunter to protect the good trolls of Heartstone Trollmarket.
His newfound powers and mission make him an enemy of Gunmar, leader of the Gumm-Gumms—evil trolls from the Darklands. Aiding Jim in his duties are his loyal best friend Toby Domzalski, love-interest Claire Nuñez, Blinky (a fatherly wise troll), and AAARRRGGHH!!! (a large, gentle, pacifist troll who was formerly Gumm-Gumm). Throughout the series, he meets other allies and enemies.
Funko has provided us with a twelve Trollhunters Tales of Arcadia Mystery Minis. Let’s see which figures are hidden inside and how they fare against other figures in the same category of products …
The set of twelve is also a complete batch. We also received a special store display box that has art from the Netflix series. Each side of the box shows various characters.
Each individual box is shrink-wrapped. The boxes, like the larger display box, also has art on all sides. The back of the box shows all the figures in the line and the chances of receiving each type of figure. Opening the box, we’re presented with a black bag—the final cover for the mystery figure.
Though they’re blind boxes, the weight of each box can still semi-reveal the type of figure you’ll receive. The lighter ones are most likely human figures, while the heavier ones are probably troll figures. Upon opening the first box, I was very surprised and impressed by the figure’s likeness and detail to the actual character. I soon found out that all the figures were equally amazing. Here are the ones I received …
Trollhunters Tales of Arcadia Mystery Minis “Jim” 1/36
The “Jim” figure is somewhat rare (1/36) and has him holding his amulet. The character is wearing his usual non-trollhunting clothes. I was very impressed by the detailing in the face, especially the hair—even Jim’s cowlick was reproduced.
Trollhunters Tales of Arcadia Mystery Minis “Toby” 1/36
The “Toby” figure is another somewhat rare (1/36) figure. The figure looks just like its show counterpart with the half untucked shirt and braces. The hair flip is also identical to what we see in the series. I was amazed by the pattern reproduction of his sweater vest.
Trollhunters Tales of Arcadia Mystery Minis “Blinky” 1/72
I was very happy to have received the “Blinky” figure. It’s also one of the rarest (1/72) of the collection. From the pose to the color, this is Blinky! I can almost hear Kelsey Grammar’s voice talking to me. Just amazing!
Trollhunters Tales of Arcadia Mystery Minis “AAARRRGGHH!!!” 1/12
I’ll admit this: I almost cried when I opened the box and bag and found the “AAARRRGGHH!!!” figure. I won’t give any spoilers away, but Trollhunter fans who have finished the first season will know what I’m talking about. Though it’s not that rare (1/12), it’s one of my favorites in this collection. I love this character and this sculpt really does him justice.
Trollhunters Tales of Arcadia Mystery Minis “Bular” 1/12
Here’s the “Bular” figure looking as threatening as ever. Son of the Gumm-Gumm leader, Gunmar, Bular has both his swords, ready for battle. This is another figure that isn’t so rare (1/12). However, it’s still one of the most impressive in the collection. From his swords to the small skulls adorning his belt, no detail has been spared.
Trollhunters Tales of Arcadia Mystery Minis “Draal” 1/24
Moving on to the son of the opposite side of the battle, we have the “Draal” figure. It’s semi-rare (1/24) and seems to show him in his earlier form—without his prosthetic arm. Here, he’s shining a very rarely seen smile. The figure is perfectly sculpted, down to the crystal growths on his back.
Trollhunters Tales of Arcadia Mystery Minis “Kanjigar” 1/72
Since we’re talking about the son, let’s talk about the father. Here we have the “Kanjigar” figure. It is, like the “Blinky” figure, one of the rarest (1/72) in the line. Shown with a stoic pose, the figure has a sword and finely etched Trollhunter armor. Again, no details have been spared with this figure. Amazingly, I received two of these figures and this ended up being the only repeat.
Trollhunters Tales of Arcadia Mystery Minis “Stricklander” 1/12
The “Stricklander” figure is not as rare (1/12), but, at this point, I wasn’t going for a complete line. I was very happy to open the box and bag and find him. The green color might be a bit bright, but everything else is perfectly rendered. Like the “Blinky” figure, I can almost hear the words “young Atlas.”
Trollhunters Tales of Arcadia Mystery Minis “Nomura” 1/24
Here we have the “Nomura” figure. Being semi-rare (1/24), this is another changeling troll like Stricklander. This character is in her human form, so maybe we should call her “Ms. Nomura.” Her evil gaze and creepy demeanor are perfectly captured in this figure.
Trollhunters Tales of Arcadia Mystery Minis “Armored Jim” 1/6
Strangely enough, the “Armored Jim” figure is the least rare (1/6) in the line. Maybe it’s because Funko wants collectors to at least receive one of the principal characters, therefore more of these have been produced. Nevertheless, it’s still a great figure. The armor, the small amulet detail, and the oversized sword are perfectly reproduced here.
Trollhunters Tales of Arcadia Mystery Minis “Armored Toby” 1/6
Finally, we have the “Armored Toby” figure. Like the “Armored Jim” figure, this figure is also one of the least rare (1/6). The “Armored Toby” figure is actually quite impressive. The various pieces of his homemade arsenal have been captured. From the flashlight-adorned pot-helmet to the back-mounted twin fire extinguishers, everything looks just like what we see in the show.
Funko’s Mystery Minis Trollhunters Tales of Arcadia collection should be on the shelves of any Trollhunters fan. By themselves, they’re already impressive, but when they’re displayed as a group, they’re sure to become a conversation piece.
More Funko: Trollhunters Pop! Review
As an overall line, Funko’s Mystery Minis have been quite impressive. Though the characters are sort of chibi-style, the characters still retain their original appearance. The most amazing feature about these figures is the attention to detail in the various adornments, facial expressions, and poses. This is another win for Funko!
