Announced at FanExpo Canada, the fourth and final season of Star Wars Rebels has gotten a release date and a new trailer.

Aside from the movies, one of the most popular new additions to the official Star Wars canon has been Star Wars Rebels. Taking place between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, the series follows the crew of the starship Ghost during the earliest days of the Rebellion.

The series has proven to be a huge hit with fans. It has included appearances by Darth Maul, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Darth Vader as well as the return of Grand Admiral Thrawn to the new Disney-owned Star Wars timeline.

So it came as something of a shock when it was announced at Star Wars Celebration that fourth season would be the show’s last. Rebels co-creator Dave Filoni broke the bad news himself to a pack house and told fans that he feels the time is right to bring the story to a conclusion.

“As a creator I think about where are we going, what so the characters need to go through. So this is where i have to tell you this is my decision as the creator of this show with Simon [Kinberg] that Season 4 is the final season of Star Wars: Rebels. I firmly believe that each generation needs to have their own piece of Star Wars and I feel that this show for a lot of kids growing up with it is very much as much a part as any of the movies and I really appreciate that love from you guys and I feel creatively that I can make this story about these characters the most meaningful that it can be by arcing it to where I need to get to the end of this season.”

And now fans have finally learned when that final season will begin.

Filoni revealed during a Star Wars Rebels panel that the fourth season will premiere on October 16. In addition they took the wraps off a brand new trailer for the upcoming season.

Word is that the new season will include some references to the time leading up to the events of last year’s Rogue One. It also sees the return of Thrawn, the debut of the X-Wings and the final fate of Kanan and Ezra, two Jedi who have been absent during the entirety of the classic trilogy.

That fact certainly does not bode well for the crew of the Ghost, as we all saw when we learned what happened to the characters from Rogue One.

You can rest assured this is likely not the last animated Star Wars series we’ll see. Both Rebels and the Clone Wars before it had fairly large fanbases and there is no way Disney is going to wait long before getting another TV series off the ground. The only question is what time period in Star Wars history it will take place in.

Star Wars Rebels Season 4 premieres on October 16 on Disney XD.
