The Hellboy reboot is now well underway as reports confirm the casting of Sasha Lane in the role of Alice Monaghan, Hellboy’s love interest.
Via The Hollywood Reporter, we have news that actress Sasha Lane has been cast as Alice Monaghan – Hellboy’s love interest – in the upcoming Hellboy reboot, Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen. With Lane’s addition, the cast has now grown to four, David Harbour as Hellboy, Milla Jovavich as Nimue the Blood Queen, and Ian McShane as Professor Broom.
Lane made her film debut in American Honey (2016). The film, directed by Andrea Arnold and also starring Shia LeBeouf and Kiley Keough, garnered critical acclaim — especially for Lane’s performance. Her upcoming films include Born in the Maelstrom, The Miseducation of Cameron Post, and Freak Shift — which will also star Armie Hammer and Alicia Vikander.
Created by Mike Mignola, the character of Alice Monaghan was first introduced in Hellboy‘s “The Corpse” storyline. As a baby, fairies kidnapped Alice to raise her as their own. Hellboy would later rescue her by taking a corpse to a specified grave. Because of her time with the fairies, Alice appears extremely young, even though she’s in her fifties.
The plot of Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen will center around Hellboy fighting against Nimue – a medieval sorceress bent on destroying the world.
The film will be directed by Neil Marshall. Larry Gordon, Lloyd Levin, and Mike Richardson (Dark Horse Entertainment) will be producing. The film is aiming for a production start date of September 2017. No official release date was announced as of this report.
News of the reboot comes almost 10 years since the last Hellboy movie – Hellboy: The Golden Army – with was a sequel to 2004’s Hellboy. Both films were directed by horror visionary Guillermo del Toro and starred Ron Perlman in the titular role. A third film was planned, but never ever came about.
